John West Wins MSC’s 2018 UK Canned Brand of the Year Award for a Second Year Running
John West has been named the winner of the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) 2018 UK Canned Brand of the Year Award for the second year running. The annual MSC awards celebrate those safeguarding seafood supplies for current and future generations.
From caviar to crab and sardines to salmon, John West has been awarded Canned Brand of the Year yet again for their range of products certified as sustainable by the MSC. The MSC blue label identifies fish and seafood caught by a certified sustainable fishery. John West has almost 50 MSC-certified sustainable products carrying the iconic Blue Fish label which are sold across UK retailers and small stores.
MSC award winners play a crucial role in supporting healthy and sustainable oceans by offering an ever-growing choice of sustainable seafood to UK consumers. The proliferation of the MSC-labelled products demonstrates John West’s commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing.
George Clark, UK Senior Commercial Manager at MSC commented:
“We are delighted to give John West the Canned Brand of the Year award. This year they have significantly increased their MSC-labelled products meaning that their products with the Blue Fish Label are 100% traceable to a certified sustainable fishery. We look forward to seeing more John West products providing a great choice for ocean friendly consumers.”
John West’s partnership with WWF-UK, which runs initially from 2014-2018, is playing a key role in its journey towards fully MSC certification. The partnership aims to improve the sustainability of John West’s and Thai Union’s seafood support chain and realise tangible improvements in global fishing practices.
John West’s parent company, Thai Union, global sustainability strategy, SeaChange® includes a commitment to ensure that 100% of its branded tuna is sourced from fisheries that are either MSC certified, or engaged in Fishery Improvement Projects to move them towards MSC certification. The company aims to achieve a minimum of 75% by the end of 2020.
Paul Reenan, Managing Director at John West added:
“We are thrilled for the second year running to be recognised by MSC for our sustainability efforts and progress. As a leading supplier of fish and seafood, we are committed to sustainable fishing, making sure our oceans can be a home to fish for future generations to enjoy forever. We will continue to deliver real and lasting change by taking positive steps to realise our ambitious sustainable goals and work to ensure our seas are sustainable now and for future generations.”
